The Top 40 Hip-Hop Blogs

Bpi_top_40_7

Some associates of mine who are in business school have developed a new blog measurement system called the Blog Performance Indicator (BPI).The BPI measures a percentage of Alexa traffic, Technorati score, Digg, del.icio.us, RSS feeds, social bookmarking reader usage and how much the site has grown in the past month and compares it vs. other "similar category" blogs.

The BPI is supposed to be the most accurate measurement of how one blog performs vs. another and the competition as a whole. I was able to convince them to run the scores for hip-hop blogs. Over 100 active hip-hop blogs (min. one post a week) were rated with over 3,000 active hip-hop blogs found in the nation...

The lower the score the better. We will continue to run The BPI Top 40 and update so that it can be used as a tool for fellow hip-hop bloggers to see how they stack up against the competition. Please note that the Rawkus Network sites (Real Talk NY, The Rap Up, Smoking Section, etc) were not included because stats for those blogs were often combined into one "Rawkus Network" number and not able to be broken out. Hopefully the BPI team can fix this though since those Rawkus sites are definitely a force.

If you are a hip-hop blog and not on this list and would like to be considered or would like to see what your own BPI score is just shoot me an e-mail at editor@wooohah.com

Yeti's Disclaimer: While WoooHah.com is posting The BPI Top 40 Hip-Hop Blogs list...we do not support, endorse or influence any of its findings. I am merely posting the info. as an FYI and just because I know all of us bloggers are somewhat curious of how we stack up vs. others. Personally, I think there are many other outside factors to "measuring" a blog vs. others (yea I'm bitter I'm only #27 on this list!) but at least this is one tool to just see how we are doing. As long as we keep writing what we want to who we want...well then stats shouldn't really matter (except if I ever crack the Top 10..I kid I kid...kinda)

UPDATE: Due to the over 200 e-mail requests for BPI scores, the window for requests is now closed. Check back here for updates when the window will re-open. THANKS!

What? No love for Wooohah? Let's get a Wooohah score going.

Thanks! This is great! I just sent you an e-mail so I can be included for next time (If I make the list)

Big props Yeti. I dont have a blog but I was always interested in it so this helps see what the "competition" is when I decide to take that jump. Good lookin out.

I don't agree with those ratings AT ALL. You're definitely in the Top 5. Peace

Props. I hope you can keep posting this updated so we can see some movement. I used to go to that other site you have linked for info but they never updated.

chea. sup to Yeti!

Oh wow Yeti! thanks for putting me up on game. This is hawt! no idea how they came up with the calculations. they sound like geniuses!! lol! :)

Thanks for this list. I just started doing my own blog for fun and its all hiphop as well. I sent you my info so would love to see how its doing. I understand your disclaimer too that its more of a separate service but its still good lookin out for us trying to understand what it takes.

I love Necole Bitchie!

wow... how did I get up there

I haven't posted anything since September

wow i dont see it like that at ALL. props for starting it though.

>> The BPI measures a percentage of Alexa traffic, Technorati score, Digg, del.icio.us, RSS feeds, social bookmarking reader usage and how much the site has grown in the past month and compares it vs. other "similar category" blogs.

that's actually quite accurate. it's a shame a lot of people don't use Digg, del.icio.us etc (myself included)

some of those are straight gossip site.. yeah they might be covering Hip Hop artists.. but are they actually "Hip Hop blogs"?

Yea I hear ya Green Eyes - I kinda feel the urban gossip sites should be separated out from the others but I think maybe it gets a bit judgemental so they just included everything.

Also I know everyone has their opinions and I'm not that happy about my score either but overall...it doesn't really matter. As long as you enjoy what you doing and reaching out to the readers you want then it's all good!

You gossip about a rapper and now you're a hip hop blog lol.

how is blossip and concrete loop on top. they aint even hip hop blogs. Plus my shid is waaaaayyyy Hotter than theirs. way hotter!!!

Cocaine Blunts is where its at cuz that site is ill. Throw in grand good as well yallz.

@ yeti- true indeed. and no shots fired at them, cos i check for them, but i never really considered bossip, c&D, concrete loop, etc "Hip Hop sites," but hey whatevers clever.

Where is real talk NY and Smoking Sessions?!

Learn To Read!!

C+D is not a hip hop blog at all. I post about a few rappers here and there but um . . no. Nah Right, UnKut, Clips & Kisses, Straight Bangin and Real Talk NY are some of my favorite hip hop sites.

Double kisses!

Damn, no mention of the big homie Dallas Penn?

Yea clearly there are some favorites that were left off (like Dallas Penn). I know they are gathering more sites and will include for the next update especially trying to get the Rawkus sites counted as well (See my notes above why Real Talk NY, Rap Up, Smoking Sessions is not on the list).

We also getting tons of e-mails about what counts as hip-hop vs. urban gossip and its a good point. Maybe next time they can separate out the lists.

What's good Woohah?! Congrats on making the list...I gotta say I was completely taken by surprise by this one. Peep me at # 34.
Peace,
StraightOuttaNYC

What about The Digital Undaground??

I know it's one of the newer blogs on the 'net...but I find it to be one of the best all around, especially with all the exclusive content + JV's unique perspective on the industry. I mean most of the top 40 feature all the same sh*t posted on all of them day after day.
